Assessment

The Student Assessment Guide and Learning Plan describes the evidence required to be competent for this unit.

You can track your progress by comparing it against the unit requirements and at every stage of your learning and study you can get support from your iTAFE mentor and advisor.

Study Guide

There are many ways that you might choose to make your way through the unit. The diagram and suggested sessions (below) will help to plan your learning through the Book supplier services unit. The sessions outlined below are a suggestion only - you may have another way that you prefer to study.


Session 1 – Introduction to bookings: Pink Tiles
This topic explores the terminology and abbreviations used in the tourism industry. You may like to think about the following: 
1) Why does the tourism industry have/use abbreviations in the booking process? Provide an example with your answer.
2) Provide an example of a source you would use to make a hotel booking and explain why you have chosen this source.

Session 1 – Consumer protection: Aqua Tiles
In this topic you will learn about the legislation that protects the consumer when purchasing goods and services. You may like to think about the following:
1) Explain why it is necessary that we understand the primary components of consumer laws and how they relate to providing products and services in the tourism industry.
2) Organisations have a responsibility to supply products as described or to substitute suitable products when unable.
a)      Explain the consequences if we don’t.
b)      Explain why it is necessary and provide an example of when this may occur.

Session 2 – Customer files: Yellow Tiles
Customer files are an integral part of the booking process, they provide us with all the details of our clients and all the products and services we have booked on their behalf. You may like to think about the following:
1) Why do you think it is important that we write customer files and documentation clearly and succinctly using appropriate terminology and abbreviations?

Session 3 – Bookings: Red Tiles
Understanding the booking systems and processes and in what order to make bookings is important. You may like to think about the following:
1) You have arrived at work and need to make the following bookings. Which order would you book them in, explain your reasoning? (Today’s date is 8th May 2014)

Family holiday to Bali departing 2014 July School Holidays
Coach trip Sydney to Brisbane 09/05/14
Flights to Melbourne on QF 16th May 2014
Overnight accommodation in Sydney 15/05/14

2) Identify a reservation/operation system used to make a booking and provide a advantage/disadvantage of using the system.

Session 4 – Documentation: Blue Tiles
There is a lot of documentation that consultants need to complete as part of the booking process. This topic will explore the different documentation required, some of which clients need. You may like to think about the following:
1) Choose one of the following documents to research and identify what the essential details are required on the document. (Please provide a link to the document)
Confirmation letter / booking of a service / invoices / customer files / receipts / credit notes
 2) Describe the process and explain why the financial component of a booking file is the most important.
